Former Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is a major lead over other potential candidates to take over California Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2026.

Despite not indicating whether she intends to run in the governor’s race, Harris said in a recent Emerson University poll commissioned by KTLA parent company Nexter Media within Hill and California politics. Dominates the candidate field.

The poll surveyed registered Democrats in California earlier this month, asking who theoretically supports them in 2026.

The answer was overwhelmingly Harris.

Former US Senate, Veep received 57% of responses, easily surpassing the second-highest voter, former Orange County Councilman Katie Porter (9%). Of the polls, 17% said they have not yet decided who to choose.

“Harris’ support is strongest among women (60%), Hispanics (61%) and Black Democrat voters (64%),” said Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling. “If Vice President Harris enters the Democratic primary, she starts as a clear favorite. Without Harris in the race, the primary is wide open.”

Harris is familiar with California’s politics, representing the states of the California Senate, serving as Attorney General under Gov. Jerry Brown and serving as district attorney for San Francisco.

As Joe Biden’s vice president, Harris made history by becoming the best female employee in American history. She is also the first African American and the first Asian American to hold the position.

Katie Porter, who represented Orange County’s 45th and 47th Congressional Districts, is a progressive beloved known for sparring with enemies on Capitol Hill with the help of a whiteboard as a visual aid. It’s a person.

Californians believe more should be spent on fire: polls

Porter did not seek reelection to Congress, instead fired up for a US Senate seat vacant due to the death of longtime California Senator Diane Feinstein. Porter lost the Democratic primary to Adam Schiff, who continued to defeat Republicans and former Los Angeles Dodger star Steve Garvey in the November general.

The third tie of those voted with 4% voted in support, is currently announcing the governor’s campaign, and if Harris is occupying the White House instead of Donald Trump, he is the presumed candidate. This is the current Lieutenant Colonel Eleni Kunarakis, who may have been.

Many Democrat leaders have urged Harris to announce a bid for the California governor’s office, but she herself has not shown any plans to do so.

Emerson College’s Nexstar Media poll was conducted earlier this week via text messages and landlines. Other topics respondents were asked to comment on were state fire resources, California high speed rail, and Newsom’s approval rating.
