The fallout between Elon Musk and President Donald Trump is an evolving situation marked by the public explosion on Thursday, but their relationship is linked to an earlier date with Trump’s first term.
An interview with CNBC CEO Tesla in November 2016 won the current president’s critical tone just days before he was elected president for the upset that implied the strength of the populist movement.
“To be honest, I think Hillary’s economic policy and her environmental policy are particularly correct, but yes, and I also think this is not the best moment of our democracy,” Musk said.
“Well, I feel a bit strongly that he is probably not the right person. He doesn’t seem to have the kind of personality that is well reflected in the US,” he later added in an interview.
“Kill Bill”: Elon Musk’s conservative evolution has made him stand against Trump with major laws
I will be attending a press conference at the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, DC on May 30, 2025.
During Trump’s first term, Musk was part of his Economic Advisory Board, often including CEO, but eventually left his post after opposing the president’s move to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement.
“We’re leaving the Presidential Council. Climate change is a reality. Leave Paris is not good for the US or the world,” Musk posted at the time.
The two continued to have an on and off relationship, but there were some positive signs in May 2020.
“Congratulations, Elon Musk. Congratulations, to Elon, Elon, Elon and Elon and 8,000 SpaceX employees. Today we spoke at the Kennedy Space Center in May 2020.
And when SpaceX Demo-2 was launched, Trump said he and Musk would communicate regularly.
“Well, I don’t get into it. But yeah – I always tell him, a great guy. He’s one of our great brains. We like great brains. And Elon did a great job,” he said.
Elon Musk’s net worth will rise by $34 billion amid escalating the feud with President Trump

Fast forward to 2022 when Musk bought Twitter and renamed X in 2022, when he revived Trump’s account after it was suspended after the events of January 6, 2021. In 2022, Musk announced he would vote for Republicans, but he showed he would support Ron DeSantis if Florida’s Ron DeSantis wanted the nomination.
According to the Wall Street Journal, DeSantis launched a campaign on “Space” on the virtual public event forum “Space” and with Musk.
However, there was a major turning point in July 2024 after Trump was assassinated at a rally in Butler, Penn.
“I fully support President Trump and hope for his quick recovery,” Musk posted.
Musk then campaigned for the president. This includes the famous moments when he jumped onto the stage during a comeback rally at Butler.
Has Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election without the help of Elon Musk?

“I want to say what kind of honor is it to be here, but the real test of someone’s personality is how they behave under fire, right?” Musk said at the rally. “And there was a president who couldn’t climb a flight of stairs, and a president who pumped his fist after being shot.”
“This is not a normal election,” Tech CEO continued. “The other side wants to take away your freedom of speech.”
“Please be a pest for everyone,” he added. “You know, people on the streets everywhere: vote, vote, vote!”
The tech billionaire spent about $300 million at the US PAC to boost the efforts of voters in swing states, including Pennsylvania.
By the time the presidential election rolled, Trump and Musk looked like close friends as Tesla CEO was with Trump at Mar Arago on election night. For the next few days, Musk reportedly stayed in Florida, advising Trump on his appointment and policy as the transition to a new administration began.
A week later, just before Musk and the new president appeared at the SpaceX launch together in Texas, Trump announced that Musk and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy would improve government efficiency to remove the government from waste, fraud, abuse and abuse.
Trump described the pair as “two great Americans,” and while Ramaswamy left the post in January and is now running for governor in Ohio, Musk quickly became the face of the agency that became the main target of Democrats’ attacks that pushed him back down spending cuts.
The protests erupted nationwide against Musk and Kudji, including a violent explosion at his Tesla dealership, which took the company’s shares and was labeled by the Justice Department as an act of “domestic terrorism.”
Flashback: The top 5 wildest moments from Elon Musk’s Doge tenure ends

During the first months of the year, Musk and Trump were discovered together at several viral events, including the UFC fight, the oval office meeting where Musk’s son “Little X” stole the show, and the cabinet meeting in late February, where Mask was the main focus.
In March, Trump hosted Elon at the Tesla Showcase in front of the White House in a Tesla Stock Dip, where the president told reporters he was buying Tesla while he was promoting the company.
When Musk’s era at Doge began to end, his classification of employees allowed him to serve for 130 days. The newly formed agency has become the child of a Democrat anti-Trump sentiment poster that consistently attacked the $175 billion cut in spending cuts that Doge estimated it had provided.
Signs of fractures in the relationship began to be shown in late May when the mask was released in Trump’s “big beautiful bill” as it passed through Congress.
“Frankly, I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill. This not only reduces it, it also increases the budget deficit and undermines the work the Doge team is doing,” Musk said.
Two days later, Musk announced its official departure from Doge.
“As our scheduled time as a special government employee is coming to an end, I would like to thank President @Realdonaldtrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk said, adding that Doge’s effectiveness will “enhance over time by simply becoming a government-wide lifestyle.”
US Presidential Election Donald Trump greets Elon Musk as he arrives to attend viewing the launch of Spacex Starship Rocket (Brandon Bell)’s sixth test flight.
Doge, who hasn’t reached Mask’s initial goal of cutting $1 trillion spending, will continue to work without Mask, whom he says is still optimistic, cutting $1 trillion spending, and saying “I look forward to continuing to be a friend and advisor to the president.” ”
That optimistic tone changed dramatically on June 3 when Musk challenged X, the platform he owned, calling it “nasty abuse” and denounced the budget settlement bill, which criticized Republicans who voted for it.
“I’ll kill the bill,” Musk said the next day.
The following day, on Thursday, the feud hit a fever pitch.
While speaking to reporters in the oval office, Trump said he was “very disappointed” by Musk’s voice criticism of the bill. The president argued that Musk “had no issues” until he knew what the bill was and needed to cut EV incentives.
In X, Musk called the rating “false.”
Trump turned to social media to criticize Musk. Musk has appointed him to find a way to cut $2 trillion after forming Government Efficiency (DOGE).
“Elon asked him to leave, saying, ‘I’m wearing it lightly.’ I took his EV mandate and made everyone buy an electric car that no one else wanted (he knew for months I was trying to do it!), and he just went crazy! ” Trump said in one post.
In another post, Trump said, “Don’t mind Elon is heading towards me, but he should have done that a few months ago. This is one of the biggest bills presented to Congress. It’s a record cut in costs, $1.6 trillion and the biggest tax cut ever.”
“If this bill isn’t over, there’s a 68% tax increase and it can be much worse than that. I didn’t create this confusion. I’m here to fix it. This puts our country on a great path.

Elon Musk will be speaking on stage as he joins former president and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump at a campaign rally at the scene of his first assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania on October 5, 2024.
At one point, Musk referenced the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein in connection with Trump as part of the larger Tillard in comments that several Republicans said Fox News Digital was “too far.”
Other posts from Musk included claims that Trump could not have won the election without his help, while accusing him of being “unclear.” In another post, Musk suggested that Trump should be fired each and replaced by Vice President Vance.
It is unclear whether the feud resolution will arrive in the next few days. Fox News Digital reported Friday morning that Musk wanted to talk to Trump, and that White House aides could mediate the meeting.
Trump told Fox News Friday that he had no interest in talking to Musk, adding that “Eron has lost it completely.”
Trump also told Fox News’ Bret Baier that he was not worried about Musk’s proposal to form a new political party, citing the positive vote and strong support from Republicans at Capitol Hill.
