A woman who was allegedly kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend in El Monte has been released after a 31-mile highway chase through Los Angeles and Orange counties that at one point slowed to maximum speed.
According to the El Monte Police Department, the man showed up at the woman’s workplace in the 10300 block of Lower Azusa Road Saturday just before 6 p.m. Police said the two got into an argument before the man forced the woman into his car and drove off without letting her get out. The woman called a friend, who tracked the car using the Find My iPhone app and called police.
A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department helicopter spotted the car on Highway 5 in the Commerce area and alerted the California Highway Patrol.
CHP attempted a traffic stop, but the man continued driving and led law enforcement on a chase for more than 32 miles.
“Spike strips were used to puncture the tires of a vehicle, which caused the vehicle to become disabled and roll over,” police said in a statement near Highway 405 and Westminster Avenue.
However, footage from KCAL News shows multiple law enforcement vehicles slowly tailgating the car, following it at a slow speed until the car finally came to a stop.
The video showed the suspect and the female passenger getting out of the car. The man approached the woman and hugged her while he talked on his cell phone. He then surrendered by slowly backing away toward law enforcement with his arms raised. Police said the woman was not injured.
The suspect is in a processing facility on $100,000 bail, according to the sheriff’s office.
El Monte police announced that charges of kidnapping and felony escape will be filed with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police department at (626) 580-2100.
