It seems that the tall story of all cats having nine lives might apply to a California Maine Coon named Aggie.
The beloved cat was feared that he had been dead for two months after the wildfires in Pallisard in Los Angeles left his family’s home to ashes.
However, her owner, 82-year-old Catherine Kiefer, embraced some hope.
Over the weekend, Kiefer received a call from the West Los Angeles Animal Shelter.
Her daughter, Carolyn Kiefer, shared the reunion on Saturday, quickly gaining over a million likes. As Aggie curls into her arms, it shows tears pouring from Katherine Kiefer’s eyes.
“I was very worried about awake and (discovering) that it was a dream,” she said.
Kiefer was a medical appointment the day the fire involved her neighbours, and her children were unable to find Aggie, who was easily stashed, when they tried to rescue her.
“One of the things my mom asked was, ‘Did you get an Aggie?” Carolyn recalls.
Many pet owners struggled to reach the domesticated animals during a desperate rush to evacuate from the Palisade wildfire in January.
Aggie, about five years old, was presented to Katherine Kiefer by a friend during the Covid-19 pandemic. Social media users are so moved by the pair’s reunion video that many have been asking for daily updates. Aggie’s veterinary bill family’s $30,000 GoFundMe campaign exceeded $21,000 by Tuesday afternoon.
The cat has received several blood transfusions and is currently meeting a specialist.
“She was basically skin and bones, and she was in absolute hunger,” Carolyn said.
The family will officially reunite with Aggie when they are released from hospital Thursday.
Kiefer says she is waiting with concern and has a message to other pet owners: “Don’t underestimate your cat,” she said.
