A ban on indoor and outdoor wood burning across much of Southern California has been extended through Monday, officials said, as air pollution is predicted to worsen in the region.
The residential wood burning ban will be in effect until at least 11:59 p.m. Monday for all residents of the South Coast Air Basin, including non-desert areas of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, and all of Orange County. .
The order does not apply to mountainous areas above 3,000 feet, the Coachella Valley or high desert areas, according to the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Homes that rely on wood as their sole heat source, low-income households, and households without natural gas supplies are also exempt from this requirement.
Residents of affected areas are prohibited from burning wood in fireplaces or indoor or outdoor wood-burning devices, and are prohibited from burning manufactured firewood, such as firewood made from wax or paper. Please note that.
The fine particles in wood smoke, also known as particulate matter or PM2.5, can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause respiratory illnesses such as asthma.
Residents can receive notification of no-burn dates by signing up for Air Alerts via email or online text.
