One construction worker was killed and another injured in an incident Thursday at an Orange County high school construction site.
First responders first arrived at Villa Park High School in Villa Park just before 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
Investigators remain tight-lipped about how the deadly incident happened, but students said they saw two men working in the gymnasium, which was being renovated.
Photos taken by students showed several construction workers, emergency workers and police cordoning off large areas with tape.
“When I went to the bathroom, I saw a lot of ambulances coming, and I saw a man on one of the beds, on a stretcher, and they put him in the ambulance,” said a student at the school. Alex Miron described what he witnessed.
Although classes were in session at the time of the incident, some students said they did not see or hear anything until a school announcement was made instructing them to remain in their classrooms.
“They told us it’s a lockdown. There’s a state of emergency,” said Landon Hunt, another student. “It was pretty scary. I thought it was a shooting or something.”
The school district said there were no injuries or danger to students or staff.
Authorities, including California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (CAL/OSHA) officials, were investigating the cause of the incident.
