Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon signed an agreement with ICE last week, allowing local law enforcement agencies in select counties to work with federal agents in tracing and detention of illegal immigrants.

A limited number of members of the five counties’ Wyoming Highway Patrol cover all counties, including major interstates, covering major interstates, according to a statement from Gordon’s office.

This agreement only shows the second such agreement, which was created directly between the state and the ice.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was the first to sign a similar “Memorandum of Agreement,” but several individual counties across the country have also approved ways to work with ICE.

“Wyoming has been sticking to our commitment to helping us secure our borders, and this is another step in that process,” Gordon said in a statement.

“Our country’s security relies on effective immigration enforcement, and we are proud that Wyoming Highway Patrol continues to support this effort and formalizes our commitment to this work through an agreement with ICE.”

The Wyoming Highway Patrol can take action against people who violate federal immigration laws and develop evidence under ice supervision. A January executive order from President Donald Trump will allow Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem to create such agreements with states and local governments.

Wyoming Highway Patrol Administrator Colonel Tim Cameron cited the unique position of hosting several cross-country highways in Wyoming.

“Our troopers are uniquely positioned to support immigration enforcement through daily operations along Wyoming’s interstate highways. The main corridors for cross-country travel are sometimes misused due to illegal activities,” Cameron said in a statement.

The Boston Seattle I-90, the country’s longest interstate, runs 200 miles down the upper corner of the state, while the Francisco I-80 in New Jersey and Sun run 400 miles down the bottom of Wyoming, especially from near the tropical border of New Mexico to the I-90 in Buffalo.

Selected troopers are welcomed from Laramie County, including the capital. Carbon County, including Rollins. Sweetwater County includes very long remote stretches of Rock Springs, Green River and I-80.

The I-25 will be bisected along the Nebraska border along the city of Casper, so some patrol officers from Campbell and Natrona County will also be taking part.

“[This] The agreement will enhance our ability to identify individuals in violation of federal immigration laws and take appropriate action under ICE directions,” Cameron added.

“This partnership will strengthen public safety, expand access to federal government resources and information, and strengthen strong collaborations that we maintain with local law enforcement.”

Wyoming taxpayers do not take on additional partnership costs as officers receive free federal training.

Robert Guadian, the top official at Ice’s Denverfield office, praised Gordon for the contract, calling him the “Force Multiplier” of immigration enforcement work.

Wyoming previously had independently dispatched troopers to support the Texas Public Safety Agency at its tropical border amid the heat of the Biden administration’s open border crisis.
