Authorities are investigating the death of a 29-year-old woman who suffered a fatal wound to a tree limb while hiking through sequoia trees in Yosemite National Park.

Angela Lynn was attacked by a whimsical branch on July 19, according to the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office. Lynn, who grew up in Los Angeles County, worked as a software engineer at Google, according to news reports and social media posts.

The sheriff’s aide responded to Tuolumglove shortly before 6pm, possessing the body and assisting in the investigation. The autopsy results say her death was a coincidence and resulted from a blunt injury.

A National Park Service spokesperson said the incident was under investigation but did not provide additional details.

SFGate reported that an incident occurred about a mile from the Tuolumne Grove parking lot. Lynn’s partner David Hua told the news outlet that he heard a loud crack from above before the wooden limbs fell on her. She was knocked to the ground and never regained consciousness, Hua told the outlet.

He called 911 and performed CPR on her until the park rangers arrived. The ambulance arrived quickly, but the paramedics did not take her. Hua said he died at the scene of the accident surrounded by giant sequoia lined up on the hiking trail.

Lynn lives in Mountain View, attended the University of Texas at Austin and grew up in Los Angeles County, according to a memorial page set for the funeral.

Tuolumne Grove is a popular destination in the park, with around 20 mature giant sequoias. The area was temporarily closed after the incident, park officials said.

Historically, Yosemite National Park has seen several fatal incidents each year.

In September, the body of the 61-year-old hiker was found in the park after not returning from a solo hike around Lake Ostrander, about 30 miles south of Tuolumne Grove.

In July 2024, a 20-year-old woman died when she lost her footing in a half-dome cable suspension system and fell about 200 feet. The Half Dome is approximately 18 miles east of Tuolumne Grove.

In March, an unidentified woman was found injured inside a park facility. Authorities did not provide details about the time surrounding her identity, and she later died at Fresno County Hospital.
