Like New York City’s mayoral primary, the Southern Arizona contest is considered by many political commentators as a barometer of where Democrats are headed when the party deals with long-standing divisions between establishment and outsiders, and long-standing divisions between progressive, medium-wings.
The race frontrunner appears to be 54-year-old former Pima County manager Adelita Griarva. He is the daughter of the late Congressman.
She enjoys supporting the state’s top Democrats, including Senator Mark Kelly and Reuben Gallego, state Attorney General Chris Mays and former Rep. Gabriel Gifford.

Grillarva is supported by two top progressive champions, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Sen. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.
Former state lawmaker Daniel Hernandez, Indigenous activist and academic Jose Malvid Jr. and former healthcare executive Patrick Harris Sr. are running for the Democratic nomination in the majority Hispanic district, where Democrats surpass Republicans by a 2-1 margin.
More than $2 million has been cooked to run advertisements in the Democratic primary, with some money coming from outside groups.

Contractor and small business owner Daniel Butierrez, restaurant owner Jorge Rivas and general contractor and vehicle accessories business owner Jimmy Rodriguez are fighting for a Republican Congressional nomination in the district.
Voting in the district is near 7pm local time (10pm ET) and results will not be announced until an hour after the vote ends.
