Zohran Mamdani and Donald Trump have many things in common. California needs to be careful

Zohran Mamdani is a stylish millennial, African-born Muslim with Hollywood pedigree who just won the Democratic primary in the New York City mayoral race.

If he sounds like Donald Trump’s worst nightmare, he might just be there. But he looks very similar to him too.

They both exploited the current political spirit of escaping traditional loyalty against their parties, and in doing so, they were well-populated with federal voters, so that to many in the political elite, they would appear to be candidates who would not be able to get their grandmother’s vote.

“Working class people want people who will promote the economic populist agenda and actually take on the current situation that will convince them that something will change,” Lorena Gonzalez told me.

She is the head of the California Labor Federation, which represents the union, and she is tired of the Democrats.

“There are days I like, why am I still at this party?” she said. “When you see them comfortable with technology, and seeing this rich problem of streamlining workers’ protection, you are fascinated by billionaires, acquiesced that they don’t tax billionaires and do nothing about rent control.

Or, as Trump put it in a social media post after Mamdani’s victory, “Yes, this is a big moment in our country’s history!”

Trump is right, words I don’t say much – Mamdani’s victory may show something deeper than the lonely mayor’s race on the East Coast. Both the left and right people long for reliability and want someone to believe, whether it’s a boomer in an orange shade or a brown-skinned hipster.

The Democrats have their own tea party moments when populist rage eats old security guards, as political strategist Mike Madrid said. Trump wasn’t the driving force behind the party’s swing to the fringe, he just took advantage of it.

“This is a Democratic populist uprising against the foundations of establishment,” Madrid said.

There was a nausea in the current state of the Democrats. Should it be more central? Should we embrace progressive endings? But the truth is that voters have already decided. They certainly want lower grocery prices, just as Trump promised, but failed to deliver. But they also hope that democracy will not collapse. And they want to buy a house, and maybe their neighbors aren’t being deported. But really, in that order.

And they don’t trust many, if not many, of the current Democrats who have been in office. Like the Republicans before them, they want outsiders (33-year-old Mamdani serves in the state legislature), or someone who sounds like at least one person.

Gonzalez spent a lot of time talking to voters, she said Democrats and Republicans on the left and right, they have little difference left between the two parties, and are tired of voting for career politicians who have not fulfilled their economic issues.

Mamdani, whose mother, film director Mira Naia (and once rapped under the name Young Cardamom), campaigned in “New York where you can afford it.” This includes rent-controlled apartment freeze payments, building new affordable homes with union labor, making both transportation and childcare free, and the cheaper groceries you guessed -. Whether he delivers or not, they were the messages that they wanted to hear the wide strip of New Yorkers, who struggle with living expenses like all of us.

And he delivered them not only with reliability, but with entertainment values that nodded to his mother’s influence. Bang Bollywood style for South Asian Auntie, walk through Manhattan lengths to talk to people, jumping in the Atlantic Ocean wearing suits in thin ties.

Chatspa and charisma.

Of course, that’s how Trump made his own rise, promised Showman Veve, and became a voiceless voiceless at risk of becoming a poor person. Yes, he is clearly a con man who is for the rich. Still, he knows how to get the line to his base. “They’re eating cats. They’re eating dogs.”

That may be California’s biggest lesson. There, we will soon vote for a new governor from the busy sector, namely a candidate for founding. Even Kamala Harris, especially Harris, fits the insider’s image, and Gavin Newsom can’t transfer the president’s ambitions as old fashioned, despite his zigzag from centralist to eavesdroppers.

“What makes someone like Zohran so persuasive is that you know where he comes from, even if you don’t agree with him or there are few voters,” said Amanda Litman, co-founder and executive director of Run, Amanda Litman, PAC who recruits young progressives and hires them for the office.

“I think that’s the distinction between him and someone like Gavin Newsom. Does that seem like Gavin believes what he says? Does he buy his own bull? That’s kind of unknown,” added Littman.

But voters’ anger is surprisingly clear, especially for those who have been loyal to the Democrats for a long time. A new Pew analysis this week found that around 20% of Republican bases are currently non-white, almost doubled in 2016. it hurts.

“One of the real challenges for Democrats is that two central parts of Orthodox are that they are working-class parties and they are non-white voters,” Madrid said. “Both are undoubtedly more and more proven, and the question is how do you get them back? The way you get them back is to have a kind of economic populist policy framework.”

Litman said the way to catch voters is to run the kind of new candidates and packages that don’t have history. Thirty-six hours after Mamdani was elected, her organization will have 1,100 people signed up to learn more about how to run it for her own office, she said. It is the biggest spike since the inauguration, indicating that voters are not indifferent to democracy, but are marginalized from existing options.

“The facilities are not invincible. They’re just not challenged,” Littman said. “And I think we can understand as much as the establishment of the Democrats exists, that the people and playbooks that led us here are not the people and playbooks that drive us out.”

So maybe more Mandani are there and waiting for them to lead the way. If Democrats were looking for advice, Trump might have offered the best I’ve seen in a while – highlighting insider/outside Democrats who named the facility as rattles, like Mamdani.

“I have the ideas for Democrats to bring them back to ‘play’,” he wrote on social media. “After years of exclusion in cold weather, including one of the biggest losses in history, one of the 2024 presidential elections, Democrats must each nominate Jasmine Crockett, a low-IQ candidate for the president, and AOC+3, respectively, has the three high-level members of the Vice President and Cabinet, to be the future of New York’s future Communist mayors, Zohran Mamdani and Zohran Mamdani.

or not.

Isn’t that slate?
