As New York City shook from the fatal mass shootings in midtown Manhattan that killed four people, including NYPD officers, Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has attracted new attention for his recent pledge to eliminate major police departments responsible for riots, civil disability and shootings.
Mamdani, who is now celebrating her wedding in Uganda, had previously been called to refund the police, but as a mayoral candidate, he has gained a much more calm tone regarding the police.
However, already a mayoral candidate, Mamdani pledged in December 2024 to “disband” the New York Police Department Strategic Response Group (SRG) at X.
SRG is one of the NYPD’s special operations forces, specializing in disability response, crime control and crowd control, and “responding to citywide mobilization with highly trained personnel and specialized equipment, civil disability and major events.”

The website also states that SRG officials are “developed in areas that require an increase in police presence due to increased crime or other circumstances” and “mobilize for shootings, bank robberies, missing persons, demonstrations or other significant incidents.”
In December, Mamdani claimed that NYPD had deployed SRG to “Harass + Arrents Striking @Teamsters.”
Mamdani pledged: “As mayor, I will dissolve the SRG. SRG has brutalized millions of cases and countless New Yorkers exercising their First Amendment rights.”
In response to the shooting, Mamdani said, “I am heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in Midtown and I am in a state of crisis in my mind the victims, their families and NYPD officers.”

He also said he “thanks to all of our first responders on the ground.”
On Monday, the only gunman later identified as Shane Tamra stepped into an office building in midtown Manhattan and fired fire, killing four people before putting on a gun.
The four killed in the shooting were identified as NYPD’s Didalle Islam, Blackstone executive Wesley Lepatner, security guard Aland Etienne and Rudin Management’s associate Julia Hayman.
The motive for the shooting remains unknown, but the gunman reportedly has been unhappy with the NFL and has denounced the sport of football for the obvious issues with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

In response to the tragedy, Mayor Eric Adams, who is running for reelection as an independent, said, “As a sign of respect for the memory of NYPD officer Didalur Islam, we have announced that we will respect the memory of multiple shootings of the Midtown Manhattan at Midtown Manhattan on 345 Park Avenue yesterday. Further notice.”

“New York City hero and guardian, Officer Didalur Islamic died while he lived. We will never forget you,” Adams wrote in another post on X.
Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s campaign for comments but did not receive a response immediately.
