Back from the holidays and just to Uganda, Democratic New York City candidate Zohran Mamdani avoided questioning from reporters Wednesday morning about the mass shooting that killed four people, including 36-year-old NYPD officer Didarul Islam.
Mamdani, a socialist who had previously sought police refunds and the disbanding of special units in response to massive shootings, met with the officers’ families Wednesday morning, but avoided questions from reporters after the meeting. According to the New York Post, the candidate spent an hour with his Muslim family.
He was photographed hugging one of the officer’s family who died when he left.

On Monday evening, the only gunman later identified as Shane Tamra walked to an office building in midtown Manhattan, fired fire and killed four people before he put on his gun.
The four killed in the shooting were identified as Islam, Blackstone executive Wesley Lepatner, security guard Aland Etienne, and Julia Heyman, associate with Rudin Management.
While still in Uganda, Mamdani responded to the shooting by saying, “I am heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in Midtown, and I am putting the victims, their families and NYPD officials in a state of crisis in my opinion.”

After the shooting, Mamdani has attracted new attention on her recent pledge to eliminate the NYPD strategic response group, the main police station responsible for riots, civil disability and shootings.
In December, Mamdani claimed that NYPD had deployed SRG to “Harass + Arrents Striking @teamsters.”
Mamdani said, “As mayor, I will dissolve the SRG. SRG has crueled countless New Yorkers who will settle the lawsuits of millions of taxpayers and exercise their First Amendment rights.”
