Universal CityWalk is about to be treated to an explosion of pink as Hello Kitty & Friends Cafe, a destination guaranteed to take social media feeds by storm this week, officially debuts tomorrow, September 6th.
Irvine has a Hello Kitty cafe and Buena Park has a Gudetama cafe, but Universal outpost is the first in Los Angeles County based on the mascot of Sanrio, the Japanese company behind the iconic character. It will become a permanent restaurant.
A true ode to the famous fictional character, this cafe is filled with giant pastel pink bows and plenty of photo opportunities, including the food. For example, the Hello Kitty Mousse Dome is exactly what it sounds like: a dome-shaped cake with cinnamon mousse, apple pie filling, and cinnamon streusel. There’s also a strawberry cake with whipped white chocolate ganache. Macaron set including raspberry, caramel, vanilla, pistachio and chocolate variations. And the essential Hello Kitty cookie is a sugar confectionery topped with royal icing and rainbow sprinkles.

You’ll want to wash down all the carbs with a menu drink like the Keroppi Matcha Late (a frozen latte topped with whipped cream and matcha powder). My Melody Lemonade (strawberry lemonade, yellow sugar rim, garnished with strawberry and lemon wheel). Or, perhaps, Hello Kitty’s Strawberry Green Iced Tea boasts a pink sugar rim that makes the strawberries and mint used in the concoction even more delicious.

But that’s not all. In addition to the cafe, Angelenos can also stroll through the new Sanrio Smile Shop next door. The store has a new line of carefully selected products inspired by various Japanese characters, plus plenty of photo shoots you’ll want to take part in.
