Authorities say the Riverside County man was sentenced to more than a year in a tax fraud prison on Thursday after selling memorabilia signed by comic book legend and Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee.
According to a news release from the US Lawyer’s Office for the Central District of California, 59-year-old Corona resident Mac Martin Anderson has been sentenced to a year and a half federal prison sentence that allegedly earned more than $1.2 million in revenue he had never reported to the IRS. Anderson was also ordered to pay $482,833 in reparations.
Authorities say Anderson pleaded guilty in March to two counts of knowingly subscribing to false tax returns. Between 2015 and 2028, Anderson had a personal relationship with Lee, selling Marvel items with Lee’s signatures to dealers, brokers and fans.
Anderson has earned around $1.236 billion since selling the memorabilia between 2015 and 2018, and has admitted its due date is around $482,833, according to the release.
Lee helped transform the 1960s Marvel comics transformation into a powerhouse brand. He helped introduce Spider-Man to Marvel in August 1962. In addition to Spider-Man, he was credited as an associate producer in films starring Marvel characters such as Iron Man, the X-Men, and Captain America.
