Texas Gov. Greg Abbott warned state Democrats on Sunday that the threat of arrests when he returned to Texas would last “literally several years.”

Abbott issued a statement in an interview with host Shannon Bream on Fox News Sunday. He argued that it was within his authority to keep the Texas Legislature indefinitely for special sessions, extending the penalty of Democrats for fleeing the nation.

“You can call a special session every 30 days. It lasts for 30 days. As soon as this is over, you’ll call another one, then another, then another,” Abbott said.

“If they show backup in Texas, they’ll be arrested and taken to the Capitol. If they want to avoid that arrest, they have to stay outside of Texas literally for years,” he added.

The warning alleges that Abbott has abdicated their role under the state constitution as he seeks to remove delinquent Democrats from office.

“We have a situation where lawmakers are violating the law under Section 3 of the Texas Constitution, where they need to act on the bill. They are violating that constitutional duties, meaning they have not fulfilled their oath of office and can be in office with this legal action I am taking,” he said.
