Neighbors of a Playa del Rey apartment complex are furious after they say more than 20 homes were ransacked in their absence during a planned fumigation operation.
Residents were told to return to the housing complex after four days of fumigation, but were met with an unpleasant surprise, finding their homes ransacked and personal belongings missing.
“I think about 25 apartments were ransacked, probably more. All the neighbors I talked to were robbed,” said Samuel Seneratan, whose home was also ransacked.
Rey Plaza Apartment Complex is located on Calle Toscana in Playa del Rey and consists of 39 units.
Seneratan said the HOA promised to provide 24-hour security during the four days the building was closed for fumigation. However, the thieves were able to break in and carry out a mass robbery.
“I think the thieves knew the apartment was going to be empty. They knew the place was being fumigated, no one would be there for four days starting Wednesday, and what did they do? I knew he was coming,” Seneratan said.
The thieves only took a cell phone and a few speakers from Seneratan’s apartment, but several neighbors reported significant losses, including cash, jewelry and other valuables.
“Some of our neighbors told us that the thieves took their wallets, cash, jewelry, electronics and even firearms belonging to their neighbors,” Seneratan said.
A worker, who requested anonymity, told sister station Telemundo 52 that he was hired to repair the door and was shocked to learn of the robbery.
“They left everything destroyed. They destroyed everything. There were hardly any calls this morning,” the worker said.
For now, it’s unclear who will be responsible for the repairs and the belongings stolen by the thieves.
NBCLA has reached out to the homeowners association for more information but has not received a response.
The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the robbery and is asking anyone with information to contact them immediately.
