Authorities have revealed more information about the investigation into the deaths of actor Jean Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa, whose body partially mummified in his home in New Mexico last month.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said it would not suspect a foul play, and the carbon monoxide poisoning test was negative.
Sheriff Adan Mendoza and state fire, health and forensic medical staff scheduled a press conference Friday afternoon to provide updates on the incident.
Mendoza said the couple could have died up to two weeks before they were found on February 26th. Hackman’s pacemaker last showed activity on February 17th nine days before maintenance and security workers showed up at their home to alert police.
Arakawa was found with open prescriptions and pills scattered across the bathroom counter, but Hackman was found at the entrance to the house.
One of the couple’s three dogs also died from a corpse in a crate in a bathroom closet near Arakawa, with two other dogs surviving. Authorities initially misidentified the breed of the dead animal.
Authorities retrieved personal items from the house, including monthly planners and two mobile phones to be analyzed. Medical researchers have worked to establish the cause of death, but toxicology reports often take weeks to complete.
When they were discovered, the body had broken down with some mummifications. This is a result of Santa Fe’s particularly dry air body type and climate, and at elevation near 7,200 feet.
Hollywood icon Hackman won two Oscars during his celebratory career in films such as “French Connection,” “Hoosiers,” and “Superman.” From the 1960s to his retirement in the early 2000s.
Born in Hawaii, Arakawa studied as a concert pianist, attended the University of Southern California, and met Hackman in the mid-1980s while working at a gym in California.
Couple’s stucco, Pueblo repetitive style home is located on a gated community hill at the southern tip of the Rocky Mountains. Santa Fe is known as a shelter for celebrities, artists and writers.
Hackman devoted much of his time to his retirement to paint and write novels far from the Hollywood social circuit. He worked for several years on the board of the Georgia O’Keefe Museum in Santa Fe, and he and his wife were investors in local businesses.
