President Biden’s visit to Southern California was forced to change plans due to the powerful Santa Ana storm.
Biden’s planned trip from Los Angeles to Riverside County was canceled due to the strong winds, which could gust 60 to 80 mph in some areas.
Instead, Biden’s remarks on the creation of a pair of national monuments in California are expected to be released next week.
“Today’s event will be rescheduled at the White House next week to allow key officials to attend,” the White House said in a statement.
Mr. Biden arrived in Los Angeles with the first lady on Monday night.
Biden was scheduled to travel to Thermal and had already boarded a scheduled motorcade in the West Los Angeles/Santa Monica area before returning to his hotel. It’s unclear when he will leave the Los Angeles area.
Details of that announcement have not yet been announced. The Washington Post reported Thursday that Biden is preparing to sign a proclamation establishing Chuckwalla National Monument south of Joshua Tree National Park. The measure would make drilling, mining, and other energy and industrial-related activities in the area illegal.
The newspaper reported that Biden would make a similar declaration for land around Sattitra National Monument in Northern California.
Strong winds are expected to continue through Thursday across Southern California, which was under a red flag warning. A wind-driven wildfire burned hundreds of acres in the Pacific Palisades region of coastal Los Angeles County on Tuesday.
