The new California bill will allow bars and restaurants in designated hospitality zones to serve alcohol from January 1, 2026 until 4am.
Existing laws prohibit alcohol sales from 2am to 6am statewide
The proposed law, AB 342, creates a new “Additional Time of Service License” license that allows sales licensees to provide alcohol until 4am on Fridays, Saturdays and designated state holidays.

Rep. Matt Haney (D-San Francisco) discussed the new bill at a press conference in downtown Los Angeles.
“As a state, we need to help cities get back and recover, we need people who are downtown. We need them to come here at night, not just during the day,” Haney said at the press conference.
“I’ve heard from city leaders and business leaders that we need more support from the state and we need more flexibility to rethink what Downtown has to offer, not just nine or five times, but on weekends and evenings.”
Haney also said small businesses downtown area could benefit from the bill as California prepares to welcome world-class events such as the World Cup and the Olympics in the coming years.

The bill is currently under committee review.
Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill last year to extend his last call until 4am, but only Inglewood’s Intuit Dome.
