Rewards are being offered for information after a 17-year-old boy was shot dead at a pool party in Torrance.

On June 18, Torrance police responded to a shooting in the 23,000 block of Hoover Avenue shortly before 9pm.

Officials discovered that 17-year-old Chyler Paton was shot dead and unresponsive. The rescue measures were implemented, but he died of injuries. Police found the shell case, but the suspect escaped.

Detectives said the investigation “has brought people of interest that led to the arrest, but no lawsuit has been secured.” Police believe there are witnesses who may be able to provide supportive information.

Los Angeles County officials are offering a $20,000 reward for information that leads to the conviction of the person responsible for Patong’s murder.

“This is a parent’s worst nightmare,” said Janice Hahn, LA County superintendent. “Chiller spent his whole life living until someone made it viciously short. I can’t imagine the pain he feels as he is feeling by his parents and everyone who loved him, but we are committed to doing everything we can to bring his murderer to trial.

Chailer Patong was a 17-year-old Culver City High School graduate when he was killed on June 18, 2025.

Patong was just a graduate of Culver City High School and was a member of the school’s soccer team. He was scheduled to start his freshman year at Dominguez Hill, California before being killed. The family described them as a teenager-loving son, siblings, classmates and teammates.

“Chailer Patong was deeply loved and had his whole life before him,” said Holly J. Mitchell, the district’s manager, including Culver City. “Our Culver City community stands with families and loved ones who lament this unimaginable loss. We encourage anyone who has the information that will help Chaila Patong bring justice to move forward.”

A gunman was arrested after being fired during an argument on June 26th, honoring his teenagers. The suspect in the incident, 20-year-old Jonathan Plater, was later arrested. Police did not provide details on what caused the fight or whether Plater was known to the victims. No injuries have been reported.

A GoFundMe page supporting Patong’s families with funeral costs can be found here.

Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to call the detective department of the Torrance Police Station at 310-618-5570.
