It’s the open season for the California Governor Primary after former Vice President Kamala Harris said he wouldn’t pursue a 2026 bid to become Governor Gavin Newsom’s successor.
On July 30, Harris said in a statement that he would not seek an elected position “for now.”
“In recent months, I have seriously thought about asking Californians for their privilege as governor. I love this state, their people, and their promises. It’s my home. But after deep reflection, I have decided not to run for governor in this election.”

Since its release, there have been many major developments in the race. This includes government Eleni Kunarakis, who has been dropped out to run for accounting instead.
“This decision was not made lightly,” Kunarakis said Friday. “At this point, I think I can have the biggest impact by focusing on California’s financial future.”
Kounalakis was a longtime friend of Harris, and she appeared to have been supported by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi before the exit.
“I have a lot of great candidates, especially Eleni Tzakopoulos, which I support,” Pelosi said in a recent CNN interview that she called the government’s first name.

Her decision to drop out sparked a response from Los Angeles real estate mogul Rick Caruso, who faced Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass in 2022.
“Eleni Kunarakis embodies the ingenuity, creativity and drive that makes California amazing,” Caruso posted on X on Friday. “As a widely respected business leader, she has created countless jobs for working families in our state. Her service in public office was exemplary.
Meanwhile, the field still has a massive pool of candidates, including former Councilman Katie Porter, Biden-era Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Beterra, public leader Tony Thurmond and former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villarigoza.

Porter previously ran in the Senate and finished third in the primary behind Sen. Adam Schiff and former Dodger star Steve Garvey (R-Republican).
On the Republican side, Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco compete in the top two open primary system spots.

Neither Harris nor Newsom have publicly supported the race, and the two are considered possible candidates in the 2028 presidential election.
The primary election will be on June 2, 2026.
