The Coachella Valley Unified School District apologized to the U.S. Border Patrol after one of the recruiters was banned from attending a high school career fair earlier this week.
Border Patrol officers were denied attending the career fair at Coachella Valley High School in Riverside County on Wednesday, sparking an immediate backlash from one of the Southern California agency leaders.
“School Agenda? After being invited to the Career Fair @Coachella Valley High, the principal told recruiters to leave — no explanation given,” El Centro, California-based Gregory Bovino told social media platform X.
A day later, the district said in a statement that the denial was careless and that officials would face discipline.
“We want to be very clear that we will not tolerate this behavior, and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken along with the members of staff involved to ensure this does not happen again,” the statement said. “Our students greatly appreciate the valuable interactions and insights we gain from learning about our law enforcement and Border Patrol careers.”
The Coachella Valley Unified Student Group is primarily Latino with many immigrant students, and the incident has led to fear among the immigrant communities, with the Trump administration pledging to massively deporting people without proper documentation across the country, and the mere presence of agents with US immigrants and customs enforcement agencies.
Many supported Bovino’s post questioning the district’s motivations. He posted the update Thursday after the district apologized.
“We are grateful and grateful for the apology to the Coachella Valley Unified School District and look forward to continuing our relationship with them for the benefit of the youth and students,” he said.
However, others supported staff who denied the entrance to the officers.
“We love principals who help our students! We develop the bones of our backs and advocate for the communities you serve,” one person wrote in a comment on a Facebook district statement.
The district’s statement concluded that it would welcome Border Patrol at future trade fairs.
