Fire officials say 62% of the Ventura County Canyon Fire had been contained as of Sunday morning, with firefighters making “good progress.”
The flames stopped growing on 5,370 acres from Friday. It’s burning near the line in Castatic and Los Angeles and Ventura County.
The fire broke out Thursday during a heat wave, which subsequently destroyed seven structures. Three firefighters were injured, including Chief James Ajje of the Kern County Fire Department battalion.
The evacuation order was lifted on Friday for 2,700 residents.
As of Sunday morning, firefighters continue to monitor canyon fires as hot temperatures and potential gusts of wind remained at 25 mph.
Two homes were found to have been demolished Saturday, according to Andrew Dowd, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department.
Some of the 1,100 firefighters working on the Canyon fire could be released later today to deal with other cases.
“We’re still on alert, we’re going to ensure that surveillance, patrols and fires are not moving. Today’s mission is to really strengthen the containment line,” Dowd said.
