New York City’s leading mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani, spends heavily on private security for his campaign and personal life despite his previous calls to refund police.

According to reviewed spending by Fox News Digital, Mamdani’s campaign, a Democratic candidate for New York City and a self-identified member of the American Democrat Socialists, spent $33,495 on civil security.

The costs reported by the New York City Campaign Finance Committee show that the Mamdani campaign submitted three payments to advanced security and investigations in June and July.

Advanced Security & Investigations, a New York-based group of security experts, offers a range of services, including armed and unarmed protective services.

It is also the “proud employer” of New York Police Department officials who Mamdani previously called defund, as well as the New York State Police, the New York City Sheriff’s Office and several other law enforcement units in the area, according to the company’s website.

The purpose listed for various payments ranging from around $8,000 to about $13,000 is “security.”

Mamdani recently made a headline to leave New York City to throw a gorgeous wedding celebration in Uganda.

The three-day exclusive wedding bash in Uganda also included masked military security and mobile phone jamming systems.

Mamdani faces intense backlash over his previous phone call to refund the NYPD after a fatal shooting in midtown Manhattan last month, killing five individuals, including the suspect and NYPD officer Didarul Islam.

On June 28, 2020, Mamdani posted on social media. “There’s no need to investigate to know that the NYPD is racist, anti-Quer and a major threat to public safety. What’s needed for #DefundTheNypd is that compromises use budget tricks to keep as many cops as possible into the beat.

“We need a socialist city council to refund the police,” he wrote again on July 3, 2020.

Again, in December 2020, the New York City Council said, “We tried to have the NYPD cut its overtime budget by half. They simply refused. There is no negotiation with this evil, corrupt institution. We will unleash it. We will end the cycle of violence.”

However, Mamdani won a very different tone during his campaign, and this week said those tweets were “not a step away from my position as a candidate.”

After the shooting, he told reporters at a press conference that “I’m not running to refund the police.”

However, he has not denied any recent social media posts since December 2024. There, they pledged to dissolve the NYPD Strategic Response Group (SRG), tasked with responding to mass shootings and other emergencies.

NYPD officers of the Strategic Response Group form a wall of protection around the vice-chairman of legal issues and vice-chairman of Michael Gerber.

He said, “As mayor, I will dissolve the SRG. SRG has imposed a settlement of taxpayer cases and brutalized countless New Yorkers exercising their first amendment rights.”
