President Donald Trump urged the state legislature to move quickly to pass the highly controversial district change bill following the return of Texas Democrats on Monday after emptying the state legislature for two weeks, saying, “Please pass this map as quickly as possible.”

During a packed day meeting between Ukrainian Voldy Mee Zelensky and European leaders, Trump urged Texas leaders to act quickly, writing that the Rezoning Act bill was “one of the most popular initiatives I have ever supported.”

He thanked Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Lt. Col. Dan Patrick, state legislator Dustin Burrows, and Texas Legislature for “great work.”

“The Republican Congressman from Texas’ great state has won three major victories, including 6.4 million votes in 2024 (including the most votes in history!) and wrote Trump.

“It’s great to see Republicans standing everywhere to save our country. It’s one of the most popular initiatives I’ve ever supported,” he continued, “Republicans love to see us fight for a big cause. GOPs pass this map as soon as possible.

This comes after a two-week standoff between a Texas Republican leader and dozens of members of the Texas House Democrats. The Texas House Democrat Caucus, in an effort to flee Congress, may deny the quorum needed to pass the Trump-backed bill, giving the GOP five additional seats. After the Democrats fled, Abbott and the other leaders vowed not to retreat and threatened to have them in office and arrest them.

On their part, the AWOL Democrats have promised not to come back until another Democrat moves to “nullify” Texas’ new Republican seat. Democrats also vowed that they will not return to Texas until the special legislative meeting, which the governor called for to pass district bills and other priorities.

The special session ended on Friday. However, Abbott called for a second special session that began soon. The Texas Senate has already voted to pass the measure.

Meanwhile, the California Legislature is back for sessions in Sacramento, with Democrats in both rooms expected to approve a map of the district proposed by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which will create up to five left-wing congressional districts at the expense of Republican minorities by the end of this week.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom last week announced that California voters would vote in November on whether to reject the state constitutional amendment and allow Congress to proceed with the rezoning plan.
