After four days of escalating protests that damaged landmarks and damaged property in downtown LA, Mayor Karenbus imposed a local curfew on Tuesday to restore order.

When and where will the curfew be held?

The curfew is located across most angles in downtown Loss, from 8pm to 6am.

The curfew footprint merges from where the 110 highways from five highways and 10 highways from 110 and 5 highways join. The rest of the city is not subject to curfew.

There are limited exceptions to the curfew for those living and working in downtown LA, as well as those who have qualified as media, law enforcement and paramedics.

Bass said he hopes the curfew will remain for several days and will consult with law enforcement and elected leaders before lifting it. She said the behavior of “bad actors who don’t support the immigrant community” needs to be curbed.

What was the consequence of violating the curfew?

Mayor Bass and LA Police Chief Jim McDonnell say curfews will be strictly enforced and those violating will be arrested.

“I’m exercising my mayor’s authority to implement a curfew in downtown Los Angeles,” Bass said. “If you don’t live or work in downtown Los Angeles, avoid the area. Law enforcement will arrest and charges an individual who breaks a curfew.”

According to a LAPD spokesperson, as of 9pm on Tuesday, he had been arrested in downtown LA in downtown. The spokesman said he expects more arrests to occur all night as officers worked to clear remaining protesters from the area.

What events led to the curfew?

Curfew comes as a continual increase in arrests have risen since protests began Friday in response to Trump’s crackdown on immigration in Southern California.

No demonstrators were arrested by local law enforcement on Friday, but tensions escalated over the weekend, leading to a larger gathering interrupted by episodes of violence, theft, graffiti and property destruction.

LA police arrested 27 people on Saturday, 40 people on Sunday and more than 100 people on Monday, police said. Another 205 protesters were arrested before Bass declared a curfew at 5:30pm on Tuesday

People were arrested for a number of crimes, including failing to disband, throwing Molotov cocktails at officers, driving motorcycles to officers’ lines, destroying and looting property.

“A lot of businesses are currently affected by vandalism,” Bass said Tuesday. “There were 23 businesses that were looted last night. As you run through downtown, the graffiti is everywhere, causing great damage to businesses and many properties.”

Has La ever been curfewed before?

The city-wide curfew from 8pm to 5:30am was implemented by then-Eric Garcetti during the May and June 2020 protests following the murder of George Floyd. Then-County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has announced a county-wide curfew that ends between 6pm and 6am.

The curfew came days after a near-peaceful demonstration, split up by robbery, fires and clashes with police. The move marked the first time since Rodney King rose in 1992 to the establishment of such a drastic curfew in Los Angeles.
