A woman was killed Wednesday afternoon when a burglary suspect crashed into her car while fleeing police on La Palma Island, authorities said.
The victim, identified only as a woman in her 60s who was driving a blue BMW, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Fullerton Police Department.
The driver of the other vehicle, identified by authorities as Anthony Hansel, 40, of Anaheim, was taken to a hospital and treated for injuries, police said.
Authorities said Hansel will be booked into the Fullerton City Jail on charges including hit-and-run, petty theft and felony escape. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will investigate the fatal crash.
Surveillance camera footage shared with OnScene.TV shows a white Nissan Rogue running a red light and colliding with a blue BMW before crossing the intersection of La Palma Avenue and Moody Street. Both vehicles are then seen crashing into three cars waiting at a traffic light.
Lauren Lau, who sustained minor injuries in her car, said: “I was at an intersection with a red light and I saw a police pursuit going on, and then a car came straight at me from the opposite direction.” ” said Lauren Lau, whose car sustained minor damage. “There was a complete T-bone and then those two cars hit me and went sideways.”
According to police, the pursuit began after a Fullerton police detective saw a burglary suspect drive away from the area of North Gilbert Street and West Malvern Avenue at 12:38 p.m.
Officers attempted to stop the suspect, who fled. During the pursuit, the suspect was involved in a non-fatal hit-and-run accident near Brookhurst Road and Orangethorpe Avenue, police said.
Police said the driver then sped onto the westbound I-91 Freeway and exited at Knott Avenue, where officers lost sight of the vehicle.
Buena Park Police Department officers briefly spotted the suspect’s vehicle, but then lost sight of it. Officers from the La Palma Police Department then spotted the vehicle along La Palma Avenue and Walker Street and took over the pursuit. The suspect crashed a short time later.
