A dramatic moment was captured on video Friday morning in a Yorba Linda neighborhood as a driver jumped from a burning garbage truck and scrambled back inside as the truck rolled down a hill.

The truck collided with an SUV and a pickup truck, but the owners said they were thankful the driver was able to move the truck away from their home. The fire was limited to the truck, two vehicles and one tree.

The garbage truck driver was not injured.

The truck appeared to burst into flames while turning around in the cul-de-sac. Details about how the fire started were not immediately available.

“The garbage truck driver did say there was a lot of heat behind him,” said Orange County Fire Department Capt. Sean Dolan.

Video shows the operator jumping out of the truck and slowly plowing into an SUV parked on the curb. She then sped away to avoid her SUV being pushed by a truck as she tried to get back into the driver’s seat.

She appeared to briefly enter a taxi before fleeing the flames. The truck came to a partial stop on the sidewalk next to the pickup truck.

“She was doing her best to prevent the car from rolling over and possibly causing further damage,” Mr Dolan said.

The Holman family’s new car and the Christmas presents inside were set on fire, but the family said they were grateful to the operator for preventing further damage.

“She did a really good job,” resident Mark Holman said. “It really kept the truck away from electricity and the house.”

NBCLA has contacted Republic Services for more information.
