A wildfire broke out in the Eaton Canyon area north of Altadena Tuesday night as Southern California braced for a night of strong winds.
The Eaton Fire, estimated at about 200 acres, was reported to have started in a hilly area northeast of Los Angeles around 6:30 p.m. To the south, an orange glow and smoke could be seen for miles in the San Gabriel Valley.
“I’m concerned that if the winds pick up, it will escalate quickly,” said Lt. Sheila Kelliher of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Evacuations are underway, according to the Angeles National Forest. Mandatory evacuation has been ordered for the following areas.

The fire occurred near hiking and equestrian trails in the Eaton Canyon Natural Area.
A red flag warning is in effect until Thursday, with wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph possible in some areas. The strongest winds are expected from 10pm on Tuesday until 5am on Wednesday.
Early Tuesday, a wildfire spread quickly in the Pacific Palisades region. The Palisades Fire has grown to more than 1,200 acres on the Los Angeles County coast, burning homes and forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people.
