The infamous exotic animal dealer who sold jaguar turnips on Riverside was sentenced to six months of probation on Monday, federal prosecutors said.
Trisha Dennis Meyer, 43, of Houston, was known for selling exotic animals from her home in Texas and for posing naked with the only animal.
She sold a Jaguar Cub from a few weeks ago called Amador to a Murieta man. He sold him again before the turnips were dumped in San Diego’s Wildlife Sanctuary. The turnips were covered in malnutrition and covered in feces that lacked hair patches.
Meyer was indicted in 2022 for “interstate transport of endangered species during the course of commercial activities, interstate sales of endangered species, and human trafficking banned wildlife species and human trafficking.”
It is legal to own a jaguar in Texas, but selling endangered species out of state is not legal. It is illegal to own a Jaguar in California.
Cubs grew into adulthood and are now renamed Eddie. He lives in the Lions Tigers and Bears Sanctuary in a remote area in San Diego County.
The maximum sentence for the four charges against Meyer was an eight-year, $700,000 fine in federal prison.
However, in June 2023, Meyer pleaded guilty to one count of interstate sales of endangered species, according to Ciaran McEvoy, a spokesman for the U.S. Lawyer’s Office. And on Monday, US District Judge Jesus G. Bernal sentenced her to six months of probation and ordered her to pay $30,000 in reparations.
