Less than a year after introducing “recycled meat, dairy and eggs” to its previously vegan menu, Sage Plant Based Bistro & Brewery has announced it will be permanently closing.
The rebranded Sage Regenerative Kitchen will close its remaining locations in Echo Park and Pasadena this Sunday after 14 years in business, Eater reports.
The restaurant cited manager Molly Engelhardt as saying that the restaurant’s plans ranged from “unpaid rent and taxes” in 2023 to closing other locations in Southern California the following year “to consolidate the restaurant’s customer base.” reports on the recent predicament of Sadly, Engelhart and her husband Elias Sosa, who co-owns the brand, “sold their California home to inject cash into the restaurant.”
Adding recycled meat (essentially meat from environmentally friendly farms) to the menu was a further attempt to attract more people to the eatery and support the business. Unfortunately, it seems that their efforts were not enough.
“It is with heavy hearts that we close the chapter on Sage,” the owners announced on Instagram on January 1st. [Mollie Engelhart] and [Elias Sosa] We collected fresh farm-to-table produce at farmers markets (long before we became a couple). For the past 14 years, their unwavering commitment to quality food and supporting local farmers has been at the heart of our restaurant. ”
Fans of the couple can sample their amazing cuisine when they travel to Texas. In Texas, their restaurant, Barn at Sovereignty Ranch, is still open.
