Families who lost loved ones to crimes committed by people around the country targeted sanctuary policies across Illinois and across the country at a press conference with Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem on Wednesday.
Among the speakers was Jim Walden, an Illinois resident who lost his son Jimmy a few years ago while Jimmy was stationed in Maryland a few years ago.
“My son worked for the US Marines in Interfield. He worked for the National Security Agency. Jimmy was 21,” Walden said.

“He was killed by a motorcycle for illegally admitting that Maryland knew it was illegal five years before killing my son. And in those five years they had put him in prison five times. He was convicted of domestic violence and was on probation.
“To say our governor gets on national television and he’s going to get up and protect these people is a gut punch for those who are lost,” Walden said of Gov. JB Pritzker.
“I call on Governor Pretzker to be a true governor and stand by federal law and enforce all of them. I don’t care if they’re two or 20 or 80 years old. I’ll send them back. There’s a path to citizenship.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker will speak at a press conference at the UI Health Mile Square Health Center on February 28, 2025.
Noem said he held a press conference “At the direction of President Trump today, we will focus on the dangerous policies of Illinois and the governor of Illinois, and bring to mind the perpetualization of his violence and criminality against the citizens of this state.”
President Donald Trump recently issued an executive order to the DHS and the Justice Department to treat federal funds as states and regions that could lose federal funds.

“Springfield needs to be particularly careful for the victims who were here, but because of the laws that emerge from this city that protects illegal criminals and affects the entire state that does not prioritize American citizens and citizens of this great nation,” the secretary added.
She also said that the event location has special meaning.
“But we are standing on this block today, because this is because a young woman has been killed several homes from here. Emma Schafer was brutally stabbed and killed by an illegal foreigner who was released to the US by the Biden administration,” Noem explained.
Pretzker called the event a “promotion stunt” and targeted the administration’s immigration policy.

“Unlike Donald Trump and Christy Noem, Illinois follows the law,” Pretzker said in a statement about Noem’s visit. “The Trump administration violates the US Constitution, denying legitimate procedures for people and destroying law-abiding neighbors, including children who are US citizens. But they have not taken real action to promote public safety and deport violent offenders within clearly defined legal procedures.
“Trumpgnome propaganda stunts don’t make our communities safer or our immigration system smarter. Illinois doesn’t have to abuse or ignore the constitution to keep our people safe. Just as millions of Americans are seeking wise and humane immigration reform, secretaries encourage us to perform less for Fox News and more time to protect our homeland.”
