The office of New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani said Thursday it was investigating the car bomb threat committed against him, despite the New York City Police Department (NYPD) hate crimes squad (NYPD) that does not own the car.

“After multiple death threats and racist messages, Assembly Mamdani’s office is taking part in an ongoing investigation by the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force,” a statement from the mayoral candidate’s office read. “Zohran doesn’t own a car, but the violent and specific languages that look like a repeat caller are amazing and we take every precaution.

“This is a sad reality, but it’s not surprising after millions of dollars have been spent on dehumanizing. Islamophobic rhetoric is designed to take away division and hatred,” the statement continued. “Violence and racism should not have a place in our politics. Zoran focuses on providing safe and affordable New York.”

Mamdani, who is competing for being New York City’s first Muslim mayor, has been criticized by his competitors, including the former New York governor, for his views on Middle Eastern politics, which reached a boiling point this week amid ongoing strikes between Israel and Iran.

In a recent mayoral discussion, Mamdani said “Israel has a right to exist.”

However, Mamdani refused to agree that Israel has the right to exist as a “Jewish state,” but rather exists “as an equal righted state.”

“This is a vicious threat of political violence against Mamdani. It’s unacceptable. These threats and others strongly condemn others like them,” Cuomo said in X.

Another Democratic mayoral candidate, New York City Secretary Brad Lander, also denounced the threat to Mamdani.
“The horrible threat of Islamophobic violence [Zohran Mamdani] Lander said. “I criticize this action to the fullest extent. There is no hatred in New York City.”
