Who says Hollywood is only about the deep appearance of the skin? Could the shallow place be a place where you can invite and award them to see the good bones below, beyond the falling look of the Hollywood Premier Motel and join LA’s historic cultural monuments list?

The designation was made at the city council meeting on July 30th. At this meeting, it seemed everyone was locking and loading the first motel to create a list.

“There may be a 1.7 star TripAdvisor rating, but we don’t judge the landmark by thread count,” Councillor Hugo Soto Martinez said in a statement.

Chairman Barry Milovsky was skeptical, “My first response was when I saw the nomination, did I really do that?” But in towns that live and die with good reviews, the 5333 Hollywood Boulevard motel proudly ignored the odds in a unanimous vote to add it to the list.

The Hollywood premiere may be the first motel to land on the list of historic cultural monuments, but its architect Joyce Miller is the third woman to have the building cut. Built in 1960, the Hollywood Premier features 42 units and its current Googie-style neon signs. Like everything else in Los Angeles, it serves as a filming location for a variety of projects, including Fine Peaks, Fargo season 3 and Justin Timberlake’s “Can of The Feeling” music video.

The list of historic cultural monuments includes a range of Los Angeles buildings, from the obvious (Griffith Park Observatory) to the French restaurant Taix, and the Hollywood Premier Motel. However, including it on the list does not automatically protect the structure from demolition or renovation. That designation is merely required by the office of Historic Resources to review permit applications prior to changes, and requires environmental review before demolition advances.

But before you rush to create a list of historic cultural monuments to book a room at the first motel, you might want to skim through those TripAdvisor reviews, but to be fair, the latest review was written in 2018. Well, maybe it’s really important to be on the outside. After all, it’s Hollywood.
