Interesting facts about the New Year’s Eve ball drop
According to Times Square’s official website, here are some fun facts about the famous New Year’s Eve tradition to impress your guests.
The ball has a diameter of 12 feet and weighs 11,875 pounds. Encrusted with more than 2,600 triangular crystals, each sparkling pattern represents a different virtue, including love, wisdom, happiness, goodness, harmony, tranquility, kindness, wonder, fortitude, and imagination. The New Year’s Eve ball was first held in 1907 and celebrated in 1908, but the Times Square celebration began at least three years earlier. The first balls were made of iron, wood, and light bulbs. The ball has been lowered every year except in 1942 and 1943 during New York City’s wartime “Dimoot,” a defensive measure during World War II. “Time Ball” precedes Times Square’s New Year’s Eve tradition. Balls have been “dropped” at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England since at least the 1830s, when they were dropped at fixed times each day for captains to set their navigational tools.
