Purchasers of Apple computers are reporting that imposters are stealing their laptops using fake IDs and QR codes before they can pick them up at multiple Apple stores in Southern California.
The crime, reported by multiple media outlets in Southern California, involved a consumer ordering an Apple laptop online, only to discover that by the time they arrived at an Apple Store to pick up their computer, it had already been picked up and taken away. It happened when I noticed that.
According to the newspaper, Los Angeles resident Darragh Marmolstein told the Orange County Register that he ordered a Macbook Pro laptop and prepared to pick it up at Americana at Brand in Glendale on November 30th. He said he received a notification that a new version was created.
Before heading to the store, she called and was told that her order had already been picked up. Marmolstein said Apple would not reimburse her for the laptop or reveal whether the person receiving her order presented identification.
Yorba Linda resident Paul Giles told NBC Los Angeles that someone claiming to be him received an order for a 16-inch MacBook Pro he was planning to give to his daughter. The incident also occurred at the Americana at Brand Apple Store.
Giles said the Apple manager told him, “Oh, I’m sorry this happened.” It looks like someone pretended to be you and picked it up. ”
Representatives for Apple and the Glendale Police Department did not respond to requests for comment.
Rick Markowitz also told NBC Los Angeles that he ordered an Apple laptop for in-store pickup in Sherman Oaks, but someone else presented a false ID to pick up his order.
Markowitz said he filed a police report but received no response. He also said Apple told him someone had used his QR code to receive the laptop.
“It’s crazy. I haven’t taken any money out of my bank account. I haven’t received any suspicious emails or anything,” he added.
