The Irvine Police Department is beefing up its crime-fighting techniques. The company on Thursday unveiled a new real-time crime center designed to help solve crimes faster, in some cases in real time.
The $2 million investment is designed to help track and solve crimes in real-time, even before criminals are aware of police surveillance.
Irvine Police say the center helped solve dozens of crimes in its first month alone.
“Using RTCC, we were able to locate the family of a missing elderly person,” said Irvine Police Department Public Information Officer Kyle Olderp. “There was a woman who was suicidal…[and] He was a 15-year-old boy and was able to find him right away. ”
Officers do this by accessing the live feeds of all the cameras across the city (approximately 1,000 in total) combined with a fleet of drones.
“They can fly overhead and arrive in time before the officers arrive,” Alderp said.
The department said the center will help curb crime trends such as robberies and retail thefts that are allegedly being committed in Irvine by criminals from outside the area.
Irvine Police Chief Michael Kent said about 75% of people arrested in the city are not Irvine residents.
“Technology is evolving in law enforcement and these are going to become very commonplace, and it helps solve crimes and prevent crimes, so we’re making this an extremely valuable asset. I think so,” Alderp said. “We understand that data is very important, and we only access it when necessary.”
