Jay-Z seeks dismissal of rape lawsuit, accuser stands by claim

Jay-Z is seeking the dismissal of a lawsuit accusing him of rape after the accuser recently admitted that there are some discrepancies in her recollection of the alleged rape that happened 24 years ago. .

The lawsuit was originally filed in October against Sean “Diddy” Combs, accusing him of raping a 13-year-old girl at a house party after the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. The complaint was amended in federal district court on Sunday. Adds Jay-Z as defendant in New York. The paper alleges that he and Combs “took turns assaulting the minor.”

Both Combs and Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) have denied the allegations.

The accuser, identified in the complaint as Jane Doe, is a 38-year-old woman from Alabama. In an interview with NBC News, the woman said she fully supports her claims but “made some mistakes” when it came to her recollection of the night.

The woman claimed to have spoken to musician Benji Madden at an afterparty in New York, but her agent said neither she nor her brother Joel attended the VMAs that year because they were touring the Midwest at the time. NBC News reported that he said he had not.

She also said her father came to pick her up after the alleged rape. But he told NBC News he had no recollection of doing so.

According to NBC News, some photos of Carter and Combs from the night of the incident do not match the description of the location where the woman claimed the assault took place.

On Friday, Carter issued a statement declaring his innocence and criticizing the woman’s Texas-based attorney, Tony Buzbee.

“Even though this incident didn’t happen, he [Buzbee] We submitted it to the court and doubled down on it in the media,” he said. “True justice is coming. We don’t fight for victory, we fight from victory. This was over before it began. This 1-800 lawyer doesn’t realize it yet, but soon is.”

Mr. Carter’s attorney, Alex Spiro, issued a statement saying he is asking the court to dismiss the case and seek discipline against Mr. Buzbee and the other attorneys who filed the complaint.

“It is astonishing that the attorney not only brought such serious charges without proper investigation, but also sought to make matters worse by further spreading this false story to the press.” Spiro said.

Buzbee told NBC News that her client continues to stand by her claims and has agreed to take a polygraph test. He also said his law firm continues to review her claims and follow up on supporting evidence.

He did not immediately respond to the Times’ request for comment on Friday.

Buzbee has filed multiple lawsuits against Combs since his arrest in New York in September.

Combs is charged with extortion, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty and is being held in New York awaiting the start of his trial in May.

Times staff writer Richard Winton contributed to this report.
