Santa Fe County officials will update the public on Friday about the deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa.
Officials from the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, Fire Department and the New Mexico Office of Medical Researchers will be recording updates on the latest findings at 1pm.
According to Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza, 95-year-old Hackman and 65-year-old Arakawa, 65, may have died several days after the bodies were found at their Santa Fe home on February 26th.
Gene Hackman accepts Oscar’s best actor at the 44th Academy Awards held in Los Angeles on April 10, 1972.

The details surrounding the death of Hackman, Arakawa and their dogs remain a mystery. Investigators ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning, and the gas company determined that there were no major issues with the gas system in the home.
Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the home and found Arakawa’s body in a bathroom littered with prescription drugs on a nearby countertop. Hackman’s body was found in another room, according to a search warrant affidavit filed in Santa Fe County Magistrates’ Court. Both bodies showed signs that they had suddenly collapsed, partially disintegrated, expanding into their faces and mummified into their hands and feet.
Authorities found no signs of forced invasion of property or signs of dull force trauma in the couple’s bodies.
According to Mendoza, one of the couple’s dogs was found dead in a closet near Arakawa’s body, but two other dogs found on the property were able to leave the house through the door behind the residence.
The couple was discovered by maintenance workers in the Santa Fe Summit residential community where Hackman and Arakawa led their personal lives, authorities said. They told investigators they hadn’t spoken to the couple in more than two weeks.
A full toxicology screen could take several months, Mendoza told the show “today,” but inspectors ordered some testing to be promoted.
Another challenge for investigators is to build a timeline – when they last spoke to them, when they last spoke to them – for a couple called “individual individuals.” There were no security cameras on the property.
On Sunday, Hackman was commemorated at the Academy Awards ceremony by actor Morgan Freeman. The two co-starred in the films “Merciless” and “Unsuspecting.”
“Like everyone who shared the scene with him, I learned that he is a generous performer whose gifts have elevated everyone’s work,” Freeman said. “He received two Oscars, and more importantly, he has won the hearts of film lovers around the world.”
“Gene always said, ‘I don’t think about legacy. I hope people remember me as someone who tried to do a good job.’ “Genes, you can remember for that. My friend, rest in peace,” Freeman said.
