Jimmy Carter dies: California leaders remember ‘rare character’

SACRAMENTO — California lawmakers expressed their condolences Sunday after former President Carter died at age 100. He is remembered for his role in the post-Watergate world and for leaving behind one of the most influential legacies in history after taking office.

“Today, our nation and the world lost a leader who exemplified dignity, civility, grace and goodness,” said Speaker Emeritus Nancy Pelosi of the House of Representatives. “Paul and I mourn the passing of President Jimmy Carter and give thanks for his sacred life of public service and dedication to peace.”

Vice President Kamala Harris said she will always remember his “kindness, wisdom and deep grace.”

“His life and legacy continue to inspire me and will continue to inspire generations to come. Our world is a better place because of President Carter,” she said in a statement. said.

Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, lost re-election in 1980 and ended his presidency in a precarious situation. He has built a memorable legacy. through the Department of Energy he created.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn said Carter left a mark on the community through his work building low-income housing with Habitat for Humanity when he was a City Council member. She and Carter worked together on a project to build 16 housing units for low-income families in San Pedro.

Gov. Gavin Newsom called the late president “a man of rare character.”

“He saw the common humanity in all of us: building bridges between people of different faiths and sects abroad while working to meet the needs of people at home.” said Newsom. “Despite daunting challenges and difficult times, his upbeat energy and spirit never wavered.”

Carter, who will be remembered as a “champion of clean energy, a staunch defender of democracy, and a fundamentally decent person,” was also remembered by Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), who issued a statement Sunday. did.

“His lifelong dedication to service guided us through turbulent times, and he left a shining example of how to treat each other better,” he said.

Sen. Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.) said Mr. Carter is “respected for his tireless pursuit of duty, his uncompromising dignity, and his dedication to our common humanity.” .

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass mourned Carter’s death, saying she was “lucky” to sit down and talk with the former president several years ago.

“I cherish the conversations we had and am grateful for his wisdom and guidance,” she said. “Our deepest sympathies go out to the entire Carter family and his loved ones on this difficult day.”

President Biden was scheduled to speak about the late president’s death on CNN Sunday night.
