The Los Angeles City Council this week approved a measure that would allow AI-assisted cameras on Metrobuses to issue automatic tickets for drivers. People who illegally park in bus lanes.
A specific start date for the pilot program has not been announced, but Streets Blog LA reports that citations will likely begin in early 2025. The city must first begin an outreach program and provide a 60-day warning period before any actual ticketing activity. As for the exact amount of the violation, the base fine is $293 and costs the driver $381 with additional fees. Late fees increase to $406.
The new program, in partnership with Metro, was tested earlier this year when the first cameras were installed on buses. According to Streets Blog LA, “bus lane camera enforcement is expected to generate an estimated $5 million in revenue annually.” The outlet also reports that after expenses, 75% of profits will go to Metro and 25% to the City of Los Angeles.
