Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell on Wednesday released details about two arson suspects who were arrested not far from the current fire area.
Officers responded to the first incident near Glenokes Avenue and Van Nuys Avenue on Tuesday around 5:15 p.m. McDonnell said citizens detained the arson suspect and extinguished a nearby tree fire.
“During the investigation, the suspect admitted that he started the fire because he liked the smell of burning leaves,” McDonnell said.
The unidentified suspect was arrested and charged with arson.
Later that night, around 9:30 p.m., firefighters responded to reports of a woman setting fire to multiple piles of trash near North Santa Monica Boulevard and North Vermont Avenue.
Officers took the unidentified suspect into custody as firefighters quickly extinguished the garbage fire.
“The suspect admitted to setting multiple fires that day and stated that he enjoyed causing chaos and destruction,” McDonnell said.
An unidentified woman was also arrested and charged with arson.
Mr McDonnell then urged the public to remain vigilant when reporting suspicious activity.
“There are people out there who are doing this. If you know of them, please contact us before something really bad happens,” he said. Ta.
