Luka Doncic has agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, circumventing his chances in free agency next summer to build a long-term future with his new team.
The deal will keep Doncic alongside Los Angeles until 2028. The Slovenian superstar had player options for the 2026-27 season under his previous contract.
Those with knowledge of the transaction confirmed the terms with the Associated Press on Saturday. The Lakers spoke on condition of anonymity as they have not publicly released details of their contract.
“I’m excited to bring the championship to LA and continue to be proud of Lakernation,” Doncic wrote on social media. “Thank you to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who have shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning.”
The Lakers acquired Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks in February last year with Anthony Davis’ seismic trade. Doncic’s extensive regimen of offseason conditioning work is also well documented after questions about his physical commitment to the sport reportedly played a role in a shocking departure from Dallas.
