Cell phone service has been an issue in Malibu, where the Franklin Fire broke out on Tuesday.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said the fire destroyed some cell phone towers in the area, impacting service. The extent of the outage is unknown, but people nearby are reporting difficulty making phone calls.
There were also several power outages in the area of the fire Tuesday morning, some of which were shut off for the safety of firefighters, some of which were shut off for public safety, and some of which were shut off from utilities. He did not have details about the power outage near the fire. Across the region, more than 40,000 customers are without power due to rolling blackouts caused by high winds, about a quarter of those in Los Angeles County. Another 200,000 closures are being considered.
It was not immediately clear how many of Malibu’s power outages were like that.
Officials are bracing for high winds in Santa Ana and announced Monday that planned safety outages could leave more than 350,000 customers without power from Kern County to San Diego County.
