Horse owners in Malibu’s equestrian community breathed a sigh of relief Tuesday after successfully rescuing horses from the Franklin Fire area overnight.
Many said they feared the fire early in the morning when they tried to take their horses to a large animal shelter set up at Pierce College in Woodland Hills.
“I was there at 3 a.m.,” Jocelyn Reiter said after a harrowing night after rescuing her horse Cashew from a stable that was right in the middle of the fire. “I was just driving towards the flames and I was thinking, ‘I’ve got to get a horse!'”
Cashew and dozens of other horses are getting water and food, away from flames and smoke, at Pierce University’s shelter, which can hold easily 200 horses.
The university’s president said school staff are trained for situations like this so the shelter can be expanded to accommodate more animals.
“We will remain open as long as necessary until the fire is contained and it is safe for them to return,” said Pierce College President Aracely Aguilar.
The hope is that the horses will have a place to return to, as stables are often the first to go up in wildfires.
