Firefighters battling the Franklin Fire in Malibu are 35% contained as of Saturday morning, improving their response to the devastating wildfire.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Saturday that firefighters were 80% done inspecting the damage, helped by favorable weather conditions including increased humidity.
The fire broke out late Monday and has since spread to more than 4,000 acres, destroying 19 buildings and damaging 23 others, forcing residents to evacuate their homes, LASD said. Since then, some evacuation orders have been lifted or relaxed, allowing more than 3,700 people to return home. However, more than 1,600 people remain under orders.
“This important milestone reflects the progress of our first responders and partner agencies in ensuring the safety of our community,” Malibu City Spokesperson Matt Meyerhoff said in a statement. .
