Zohran Mamdani once said he didn’t believe that calling the police was a proper response in cases of domestic violence.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist candidate who shocked the coast-to-coast political world with an astonishing victory in the mayor’s New York Civic Party primary last month, made a comment on a 2020 podcast.
“If someone is jaywalking, if someone is surviving, if they are experiencing domestic violence, there are far more different situations depending on the people who are trained to deal with those specific situations, as opposed to individuals with guns,” Mamdani said.
Comments he came five years ago on the “immigration” podcast in which he denounced the New York City police department was first reported by a conservative Washington free beacon.

Since securing the Democratic mayoral nominations for former New York governor Andrew Cuomo and nine other candidates, the 33-year-old Queens Ugandan-born lawmaker has faced intense scrutiny over past comments on police.
Mamdani, who took a big step towards becoming the first Muslim mayor of the country’s most populous city, ran in the Democratic primary on a platform that called for police to be replaced by “crisis responders” in the case of “mental health.”

However, Mamdani’s campaign policy notes do not define such cases, and it is unclear whether he will push if he is elected to prevent police from responding to reports of domestic violence. The New York Police Department (NYPD) responded to more than 100,000 domestic violence cases in 2024.

New York Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul congratulated Mamdani on his main victory and praised the laser’s focus on affordable prices on the campaign trail, but she is now refraining from supporting him in the November general election.
At a press conference Friday, the governor stressed that if Mamdani becomes New York City’s next mayor, he “is concerned about what will happen at the police station.”
“Everyone is worried about what will happen to the city police,” Hochur said.

In 2020, amid a national Black Life Matter protest, the protests after George Floyd’s death publicly referred to the NYPD as “wicked and corrupt,” calling for its refund and dismantling.
In a viral tweet in December 2020, he said, “There is no negotiation with this evil, corrupt institution. We will dismantle it. We will dismantle it. We will end the cycle of violence.”
He also linked LGBTQ+ release to the abolition of police, claiming in a November 2020 tweet that “queer release means reimbursing police.”
Vice President of Police Joe Gamaldi said this week that Mamdani’s past rhetoric symbolizes dangerous, radical ideology.
“Anyone who still supports police refunds is completely insane,” Gamaldi insisted. “Especially after seeing some horrible consequences for our urban communities. It has led to rampaging crime and obstacles, historic murder rates in more than dozens of cities, destroying the quality of life for millions of people.”
Now, as Mamdani turns to the mayor’s eyes, his message of public safety appears to be changing. He has retreated from some of his previous rhetoric and acknowledged the importance of police in dealing with violent crimes.
“I will not refund the police. I will work with the police because I think they play an important role in creating public safety,” he said, 65% of crimes in the second quarter of June 13th have yet to be resolved. [that] We have mental health professionals and social workers who deal with, tackle and resolve mental health crisis and homelessness. ”

His current platform includes the creation of a Community Safety Bureau to handle non-violent cases that he believes will reach the root cause of the crime. Mamdani’s public safety plan includes reallocating $600 million from existing programs and raising taxes on wealthy New Yorkers to fund the new sector.
He also spoke about reducing police overtime and cutting the NYPD’s $80 million communications budget.
