Authorities say the young man died after leaving a disabled vehicle on the 210 Expressway early Saturday morning.
The incident was first reported around 3:57am, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A 21-year-old man was driving a grey Toyota Tacoma when he collided with a big rig. No one was injured in that first crash.
However, the collision invalidated his vehicle in the westbound 210 central lane. A Winnetka resident attempted to leave the vehicle inside the lane and instruct the driver to pass while standing on the road.
A man driving a grey Volkswagen Jetta attacked him while he stood on the road.
The 21-year-old man was declared dead at the scene. His name has not been made public yet.
The Volkswagen driver also collided with a failed Toyota. He suffered a serious injury and was treated at a local hospital.
It is not yet clear whether drugs or alcohol are the factors behind the conflict.
All lanes were reopened by 8:10am
Additional details were not available immediately.
