Riverside County families welcomed the new year with smiles, but they had another reason to celebrate 2025.
Emmeline Hayes was born at 2:27 a.m. Wednesday at Riverside University Health System Medical Center in Moreno Valley. She was the first baby born at the hospital in 2025.
Both parents are fine. The couple has two other siblings.
“I want what’s best for my children,” said mother Natosha Daoust. “You want to protect her. It’s hard, but it’s exciting in the best way.”
The family visited the hospital on Monday, as Emmeline, who weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces, was originally scheduled to be born on Christmas Day. The baby surprised everyone, but it held out until 2025.
“This person had other plans and kept the mother in labor all day and then she didn’t come. The epidural wore off and we had to start all over again the next morning,” Daust said. “It was 24 hours, so we had to start all over again, but we did it. She’s here.”
The couple were presented with a gift from the medical team. They say Emmeline currently holds the record for the second-closest hospital birth to midnight. The baby was born on January 1, 2017 at 12:45am.
“I think it’s amazing. It feels special,” said his father, Jonathan Torosan. “I have a special baby. First it was Christmas, now she’s a New Year’s baby. Good day.”
