The new four-mile subway track will completely change the way Angelenos commutes with parts of the West Side by the end of this year. The first phase of Metro’s D-Line expansion, scheduled to open later in 2025, will expand services below Wilshire Boulevard, located west from Koreatown past the Beverly Hills border and eventually UCLA.

However, transit riders, especially those in K-Town, need to tolerate several months of commute pain before they can get there. Metro announced that it will temporarily close the entire D-line (formerly known as the Purple Line) at the start of service on Saturday, May 17th to Friday, July 25th, to connect westward in the present West.

The D-line is the shortest of the Metro’s half-dozen railway lines, with six of the eight stops, downtown and Westlake in LA shared with the B-line (red). Thankfully, that means that all of these stations will continue rail services during the closure for Hollywood B Line north of DTLA. In downtown LA, specifically, the metro says it can expect trains to increase every 12 minutes (until 7pm on weekdays and after 7am on weekends).

But that’s a very different story for two stops west of Koreatown, Wilshire/West and Wilshire/Normandy. Because these two stations are not fully used, Metro will instead operate a temporary 855 bus. This follows a B-line schedule and takes riders east, just like Wilshire/Vermont. Alternatively, you can rely on existing 720 or 20 bus routes (or take a walk about half a mile between each stop).

Metro says it will use the 70-day closure to connect all rails, communications and power systems between the existing D-line and upcoming expansions. After work concludes in July, the next major milestone is the yet-to-be unannounced opening day for three new stations: Wilshire/Lovere, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/Lasienega.

The list of “What to look forward to in LA in 2025” includes the D-line expansion. Looking at the location of the new stop, it’s easy to see why it’s added in Wilshire and La Brea, about half a block below République. It is located right next to the Petersen Automobile Museum and across from the LACMA and the Academy Museum in Wilshire and Fairfax. and Wilshire and Lasienega, near the Beverly Hills border and Saban Theatre. The line will then be expanded near Rodeo Drive in 2026, to the edge of Century City in 2026, and to the edge of the Century City in 2027, and by UCLA and VA in 2027.

It’s not just the D-line in 2025. The A-Line will continue its San Gabriel Valley expansion with stations in Glendora, Saint-Dimas, Raverne and Pomona later this year, with the C-Line LAX/Metro Transit Centre Stations opening on June 6th.
